Beginning film photography..
My first steps into the film photographic universe have been quite the journey. It’s truly changed how I see things and has been an incredibly rewarding hobby.
I had never really been all that interested in photography. I played around with point and shoot digital cameras before, thinking I was all artistic with horizons at a 20° angle, making everyone feel off balance when they look at it. But nothing more.
A little over a year ago, through a series of other interests, I became aware that film photography is still quite popular and was growing steadily. I just had to give it a try. I asked my dad if his old camera I remembered almost breaking as a kid was still around and was delighted when he sent me pictures of it in all its beauty. An Olympus omG.
When I finally got my mits on it, I had no idea what to expect out of it. Fueled with excitement by countless reviews and videos, I grabbed some rolls of Fuji 400 superia and some Ilford XP2 from a London Drugs, burnt through the first 2 rolls, and brought them back to be developed and scanned. I wasn’t really expecting much from the results. Being the first time ever using manual focus, and relying on the built in meter, the chances of them all being rubbish were pretty high. But in a way I didn’t really care. I had so much fun “pretending” to take pictures, looking through the veiwfinder and working the advance lever, I would have got another camera and tried again. But it didn’t let me down.
The images that came back absolutely thrilled me. There was such a feel to the pictures. Such a warmth I had never seen in my photos from my phone or any other camera I had used. Those first two rolls hooked me for good.
There are alot of firsts for me. Its a first into film photography of course, but its a first into photography in general. Theres so much to explore and learn, and hopefully this blog will be the place to do just that. In the future I hope to dive into projects, experiments and topics that I know have been covered many times over, but maybe can bring something new and my own take on these things.
I’ve only had experience in handling a few different cameras. All of which will be making appearances! The Olympus omG has been an incredible tool for getting into this hobby and couldn’t be happier with my dads choice of camera. Its such a simple camera to use and is perfect for beginning film photography and even professionals as well! Perhaps I’ll go into a deeper review of this camera later. For now lets see where this site leads! I can’t wait…
